Defy The Sky Read online

Chapter 5

  NanoBots

  I hunker down as a storm of gunfire echoes around me. Captain Sparks’ elite team have dug themselves in fairly well and are spraying our makeshift bunker with a steady pelting of bullets, like a harsh metal rainfall. I decide it is time to use my secret weapon. I press the small button that is imbedded in my earlobe and feel the nanobots surge through my body. The nanobots give me a hundred percent control of my body’s systems.

  I Jump up and tweak my adrenal glands to max output. The world slows as I leap over the makeshift bunker clearing the 6 foot tall wall of junk with ease. I charge towards the elite team at inhuman speed. I can see the individual muzzle flashes of weapons fire and can feel the wind of the bullets passing me as I go. I can see the bullets as they fly and dodge them as they come. It’s not easy dodging bullets even with my body set to eleven. I only have a split second from muzzle flash and the bullet reaching me to dodge.

  I leap with my enhanced muscles towards the bulkhead next to the elite team’s bunker. As my feet hit the wall I push off and fly over their barricade. I look down and see one of the elite team member’s looking up at me a ways back from his fellow pirates and I aim my foot to take him in the throat. I must be doing about 65 kilometers an hour when I hit the pirate. His throat instantly crushed as I land lightly on my feet.

  I turn to see the remaining pirates turning in slow motion towards me. I launch towards them. The pirate closest to me is almost completely turned around towards me when I punch him in the chest. I feel his chest crush and as he begins to fall I grab his body and throw it at his friends. He sails like a missile and crashes into them. As the pirates start to fall backwards I am moving toward them my legs churning madly. I grab the gun from the nearest pirate as he falls and start shooting as he is hitting the ground. I send the bullets into the pirates before they even have a chance. I check my surroundings and find all the elite squad is dead. I flip back over the barricade and run towards Dozer. As I hop onto our barricade I look down and smile at the look of awe on Dozer’s face.

  I can’t help but to laugh, but then there is a mist of meat and juice that explodes out of my leg. I fall as my leg can no longer support me. Dozer grabs me and sets me gently on to the ground. I look down at the gaping hole in my leg and wonder at the muscle, fat and bone I can see. The pain hits and it is awful. Luckily for me the nanobots are still flowing so I clamp on the nerves and the pain fades to a dull ache. Next I clamp down on the blood vessels and veins to slow the bleeding, then demand my body to start healing.

  Dozer is taking off his belt to I assume make a tourniquet. I wave him off and tell him to check what he can see past our barricade. Dozer looks over the wall and then tells me what he sees.

  “Anker, there is a giant freakin robot out there bristling with weapons.”

  “Well Dozer, help me up so I can announce our surrender.”

  Dozer must not have heard that Shin had the wasp because the look he gives me is pure confusion. He helps me to my feet and lets me lean on him as I yell past our barricade.

  “Captain Sparks I have decided to take you up on your offer. The ship is yours we will leave quietly.”

  The reply comes floating back from Sparks.

  “I would normally make you suffer for your insolence captain but the truth is it’s just me and the robot here, so you have made me a very rich man. I will be honorable and let you leave. However if I ever see you again I will make your death excruciatingly painful and slow. Now get off my ship!”

  “ Ice, Dozer let’s get back the Defiance.” I wave a salute at Captain Sparks, then I turn and with one arm over Dozer and the other over Ice we make our way back to the Defiance. Somewhere along the way I must have passed out because I find myself in the medical bay bed and Lars smiling down at me like some benevolent Norse God.

  “Welcome back to the world of the living Captain Laursen.” His white teeth peeking out from behind the curtain of his beard. I could see worry hidden in his sparkling blue eyes.

  I smile as I look up at him “Glad to be back Lars, I’m guessing that giant ugly pile of bandages around my knee is your doing?”

  His eyes twinkle as he says “ I’d have to say it’s an improvement to your look Anker! I gave you a nice dose of nanobots and they are fixing that knee of yours. You will be up and walking around soon.”

  “I was wondering why my knee feels like it is a home to an ant colony. I’m guessing you turned off my nanobots?”

  “I had to, they were destroying my medical nanobots.”

  I then noticed movement behind Lars and notice that the entire crew minus Shin were there watching. All of them were either smiling or watching me with worry. The only one who looks happy is the one who is perpetually happy, Loki. He is currently wiggling happily while he stares at me. Kiley bends down, scoops Loki up and places him in my lap, he immediately starts bathing me in dog drool.

  Kiley squeezes my hand and kisses my forehead. “We were worried you big jerk!”

  I laugh and wink at her. “Oh, so you do care about me eh?” She just rolls her eyes and smiles.

  “ How long was I out for?”

  Dozer pushes forward and says “ You’ve been out for about twenty minutes Anker. Lars says you burned up all your energy using those combat nanobots of yours. A few more minutes and you wouldn’t be breathing anymore.”

  “Well I’ll try to be more careful ok? Thank you Dozer and Ice for getting me here alive.”

  Ice, standing in the corner, nods at my thanks.

  “Aww shucks Cappy tweren’t nothing.” Dozer jokes.

  “Hey Listen! That big Meany Sparks is on the line.”

  My crew looks hesitant but I just not and say “patch him through.”

  The ugly visage of Sparks floats about three feet from my face. I can tell he is seething with rage.

  “You bastard, you stole my wasp! I will find you one day Captain Anker and you will live a long painful time before I grant you death!”

  I shoot a grin at the angry pirate and reply.

  “Easy Sparky, I may have taken your ship but I left you a big fat one, does she remind you of your mother?

  Sparks is spitting with rage.

  “ I will find you and your crew and I will have vengeance!” With those words his image disappeared.

  I look up at my crew, the drugs Lars had pumped into my system is hitting me hard.

  “You were all magnificent today. We may not have the Golden Sun, but we do have lots of valuables from her. I think I’m going to pass out now…. Will you still be there when I wake up?

  They all smiled and said yes. I love them like family is my last thought as I get some rest.
